Consular service
Certifications, Translations, and Legalizations
The Consular Section certifies documents issued by Bulgarian and Japanese institutions.
Documents issued by the Japanese authorities to Bulgarian citizens must bear an “Apostille” stamp issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, which is authenticated at the Embassy of Bulgaria in Tokyo. Documents issued by the Bulgarian authorities to Japanese citizens must bear an “Apostille” issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria and be certified at the Embassy of Japan in Sofia.
In order for Japanese documents legalized in this manner to be used in Bulgaria, they must be translated into Bulgarian. The Embassy offers translation services through its official translator for standard civil status documents, including birth, marriage, and death certificates, as well as certificates of residence and documents required for the procedure for renouncing Bulgarian citizenship.
For other types of documents, you may contact the Embassy’s sworn translators:
Mr. Antonio Angelov, accredited by Ambassador’s Order No. 32/22 October 2024. Email: A.angelov91@yahoo.com
Mr. Stoyan Ivanov, accredited by Ambassador’s Order No. 7/27 January 2025. Email: translations.ivanov@gmail.com; mobile phone: 080-8081-7358
Ms. Maria Baurenska, accredited by Ambassador’s Order No. 44/21 October 2026. Email: maria.baurenska@gmail.com

Ms. Daniela Cheresharova, accredited by Ambassador’s Order No. 44/21 October 2026. Email: daniela.cheresharova@abv.bg
Once the translation has been completed, the document must be certified by a consular officer. The translator’s signature is certified in accordance with Tariff No. 3, which sets out the fees collected for consular services within the system of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the State Fees Act.
The Consular Section may certify the date, content, and signatures on private documents that are not subject to registration and are submitted by Bulgarian or foreign citizens, provided that the document is drawn up in Bulgarian and is intended to have legal effect within the territory of Bulgaria. Individuals whose signatures are to be certified must appear in person before the consular officer.
All fees for consular services must be paid in cash, in Japanese yen, at the Embassy. Receipts will be issued to citizens for their payments.
